Team roles

When people collaborate, you can identify team roles. You can distinguish between functional, organisational, and personal roles. Depending on the objective, what you want to achieve with a team, each team has an ideal composition.

A team consisting entirely of creative individuals runs the risk of getting bogged down in ideas. A team consisting entirely of implementers runs the risk of overloading with work without achieving meaningful results. Therefore, it can be helpful to be aware of your natural role within a team.

The group role test on the Career Zone helps you determine to what extent different team roles appeal to you based on your personality. The degree to which a team role suits you is indicated by a number of points. The nine roles are:

  • Implementer
  • Resource investigator
  • Plant
  • Monitor Evaluator
  • Shaper
  • Coordinator
  • Completer Finisher
  • Team worker
  • Specialist
  • Take the Team Roles Test.
  • At the end of the test, you will be asked to enter some information. You can skip this if you prefer not to. You will still receive the test results.
  • Read the report carefully so that you know how to interpret the results.
  • Save your test results (PDF) in your Career Planning folder for easy access.

  • Review your results. Are they recognizable? What stands out? What does this mean in practice when you consider previous collaborations with other people?
  • List the three roles for which you scored the highest percentage in your Career Planning worksheet. And provide examples of situations in which these roles were clearly evident. Can you also think of examples of your pitfalls in a team? How could you overcome these?
  • Also indicate the two roles for which you scored the lowest. Are you aware of situations where you collaborated with people who fit the same role as you? Did you encounter any challenges? If so, what did you encounter? How did you resolve it, or could you resolve it?
