Competencies

Gaining insight into your competencies and further developing them is important for your career.

What are competencies?
Competencies are defined in different ways, but one of the common definitions is:
A competency is 'a combination of knowledge and insight, attitude and skills that can be identified in behavior, and contributes in achieving goals in a practical situation'. Examples include: taking initiative, analysing, deciding, creating, planning and organising.

Competency test
With the professional Competency Test on Career Zone, you can gain insight into your strengths and weaknesses. The following competencies are assessed:

  • Take the Competency Test
  • At the end of the test, you will be asked to enter some information. You can skip this if you prefer not to. You will still receive the test results.
  • Read the report carefully so you know how to interpret the results.
  • Save your test results (PDF) in your Career Planning folder for easy access.
     
  • Review your results. Are they recognizable? What stands out? and read the development tips.
  • List your 5 strongest competencies in your Career Planning worksheet <link>. For each competency, provide an example situation where you were able to use it effectively and describe the result of your action.
  • List 3 weaker competencies that you would like to develop further. (Be sure to also review the development tips from your test report.) And bescribe how you plan to approach this.
  • It's also important that you get energised by the activity for which you use your competency. Take another look at your most important competencies from the test. What are you not only good at, but also energises you?
