Elevator pitch

One of the questions during a job interview is often ‘Tell me something about yourself.’ That's not so simple. One way to do that is to pitch yourself with an elevator pitch.

Delivering an Elevator Pitch: pitching is presenting yourself. You briefly but powerfully describe yourself in 45 to 60 seconds.
When you network, you'll also notice that you're telling something about yourself, and you do it in essentially the same way.

It's not easy to clearly and concisely convey who you are and what you want in one minute, and writing/creating a pitch or your story requires some preparation.

Assignment:

  • Use the information from your personal profile and (career) profile for this as ingredients for the content of your story.
  • To avoid getting bogged down in a list of your competencies or ‘I am X, 25 years old and just graduated in Y,’ you can link your story to a striking example or a metaphor. This is especially true if your study program and/or what you would like to do contains a lot of jargon. Not everyone understands this, and by telling it in plain language, you can get others on board more quickly. The Career Zone elevator pitch page explains how to do this.
  • Once you've written your story, practice pitching it out loud. Record it if necessary for yourself or present it to others and ask for feedback and tips. Is the gist of what you want to share clear? Does the other person have an idea of what you're looking for in a job, for example?
