Curriculum Vitae
Your curriculum vitae (CV) is an essential document when applying for a job.
In many cases, it's the first thing an employer sees: your CV. So, it's especially important to make a good first impression! A common assumption is that you write a cover letter for each application and that the CV is the same for every application. This is incorrect! The CV should clearly show why you'd be the right candidate for this specific position. Customisation is therefore crucial not only for the cover letter, but also for the CV.
How do you do that? By conducting a vacancy analysis that provides input for both your cover letter and your CV.
Ask yourself questions like:
- What is the vacancy asking for?
- What are they looking for?
- Do you also provide an ‘answer’ to this in your CV?
- What keywords are used in the job posting to describe what an employer considers important and therefore looks for in an applicant?

- Read the information about Curriculum Vitae carefully.
- Write or update your CV based on the tips and examples, using the information from your personal profile and (career) profile.
- Tip: It's recommended to create a basic CV that outlines everything you have to offer. You can then easily adjust this for each application, for example.
- Save your CV or multiple CVs in your Career Planning folder.
- Have someone else read your CV. What feedback/tips did you receive on your CV?
Note: You can always have your CV reviewed by a Career Service staff member at your faculty. Or you are very welcome to attend a workshop on writing a CV.
